It is a good thing for all the violinists that they themselves can fix the violin bow without making much expense over the string shops. Bow making is an art and with a regular practice; one can learn to repair a violin bow. The art of bow making requires skills for shaping up the bow stick along with other requisites. The things that one requires in order to repair a violin bow include saw, clamp, thin hardwood, epoxy glue and acetone.
First of all, one needs to remove strings from the broken and damaged violin bow and then pull out the string clamp, also known as the ‘frog’, from its bottom portion. The next step must be the examination of the break and then fitting of both the pieces of violin bow together. The glue must not be applied initially and it must be checked that they fit tightly without any gaps. Now the acetone is to be used for cleaning the break’s surface on both bow pieces. Spreading out a thin epoxy layer on these surfaces would help in proper fitting of the bow and clamp. This must be kept for drying for next 24 hours.
Now after 24 hours, the bow needs to be removed from the clamp and then the saw is to be used for cutting through break at some perpendicular angle. The glue then is spread on the wood’s surface. One must then try sliding it carefully into the made cut. This again is to be kept for drying for another 24 hours. Once it gets dried, any kind of excess wood must be cut off. Sandpapers are then to be used for making the area smoother and after this; varnishing, staining or anything of this sort can be done for finishing depending on individual liking. One must wait for minimum a week before playing or restringing the bow.
