Since majority of classical saxophone literature is written for alto, most beginners prefer to stick to the alto saxophone. Separate student, intermediate, and professional saxophones are available. Saxophone prices range between $200 and $7,000 on an average.
A used saxophone is a more viable money saving option. The price of a used saxophone is usually set depending on the material with which it is made, its age, the brand to which it belongs, and most importantly the condition of the saxophone. The best part is that used saxophones, especially used horns can be found in the desired quality and price range.
New horns can be up to 10 times costlier than used horns. Vintage saxophone horns are very superior in terms of the craftsmanship and the material used. Vintage saxophone horns usually have a great deal more etching, designs and decoration than modern day machine made horns because the manufacturers give less thrust on the craftsmanship. Even the frills and finishing of vintage saxophone horns was much better compared to their contemporary counterparts. They usually have more firmly fixed brass because the vintage horns were usually plated rather than just being coated or polished. Considering all these points, it is advisable to opt for a used saxophone horns.
While buying a used saxophone you must learn about a thing or two on how to get a good instrument without getting ripped off. The first tip is to look for respected brand names such as Selmer, Conn or King. Second tip is to confirm whether the seller is a sax musician, or just a seller. If the person confirms that he is a sax player, then directly ask him about the performance of the instrument and how the sax sounds when played. Third tip is to inspect the condition of the pads and if possible, ask for a professional technician's report along with enlarged image to detect any visible flaws. Poor finishing or polishing should not be a matter of concern, though. However, check the instrument closely to detect damaging dents and dings which can affect more than just the looks of the instrument. The fourth tip is to always make payments through a PayPal account because in case of any discrepancy or dispute, they will help resolve the dispute for you.
