Music increases the metabolic activities within the human body. It accelerates the respiration, influences the internal secretion, and improves the muscular activities .It stimulates the brain, reduces tensions and removes fatigue.

A lot of research has been done in this area to obtain the connecting link between music and the brain. The brain was put under observation while listening to music and it was studied as to how exactly the brain receives the incoming information and responds to it. Music engages the brain over a period of time and sharpens its ability to anticipate events and sustain attention. The effect of music therapy may be immediate or slow, depending upon number of factors like the subject, mental condition, environment and the type of music, selected for having the desired effect.

Music therapy largely depends on individual needs and taste. Peak brain activity occurs during a short period of silence between musical movements when seemingly nothing happens. In the process of listening to music during the research a remarkable difference was found between the left and right side of the brain, the right side was far more active and alert. It was also noticed that the response of the brain in different music notes is different. Music increases the metabolic activity within the human body.

There are a lot many factors which are to be considered like notes, rhythm, and volume beats etc. There should be a proper match in what the listener wants to hear and what they actually hear. Unrelated cords trigger discomfort in different parts of the brain. The frequency and amplitude of music also affect the brain. A loud and harsh music causes restlessness in the brain. As music is considered a mode of non-verbal communication; it carries its own quality of refreshing the brain and making a person calm and composed.

Though a lot of research has been done regarding music therapy and brain and there has been a progress but several problems have come up which signify that a further research is required. The use of music therapy should be taken up with care as it is based on scientific research which also helps in finding out which type of music will be effective for the individual’s brain.
