The length of time a note is to be held is called note duration. Not all notes are held for the same time. Some are to be held for a longer period while some for a shorter period.

Between the long and the short notes there are many other kinds of notes. Notes are named after the first seven letters in the alphabet -- A, B, C, D, E, F, and G -- and keep the same letter value as they are repeated up or down the keyboard or other musical instrument.

The duration of notes needs to be well explained by the composers. It can easily be demarcated by making each note a little different. There are whole notes, half notes, quarter notes eighth note, sixteenth note etc. In written music the length of a note is denoted by a shape and when there is no note duration, a rest is denoted by another shape. A whole note is denoted by a single shape on a line, if a line is divided in to two halves it is called a half note. The next smaller note value is called a quarter note. It takes four quarters to make a whole note further shorter notes are called eighth notes. Two half notes occupy the same amount of time as one whole note.

It is also important to mention that the value of a note can be changed by adding a dot. Dotted notes represent the value of the original note, plus one half. For instance, dotted half notes are held for three beats, dotted quarter notes for a beat and one half, and so on. Duration scale is an ordering scale of the duration between the duration from the longest to the shortest while duration range is the difference between the length of the shortest and longest, and the duration hierarchy is an ordering of those durations based on frequency of use. Duration in music is considered as one of the fundamental aspect of music and rhythm.

In the traditional music the note duration was notated differently. With the advancement of technology it is now possible to mark the note duration digitally. There are two inputs used for this notation. Music theory has reached new horizons it is day by day becoming more common and useful. Its benefits are proving in each and every field. Note durations in music therapy play a major role as they directly help in assessing the response and behavior of people during a therapy. They are beneficial in getting to know the response of the person and hence it becomes a bit easy to work on the required treatment.
