Before playing this musical instrument one should check that it does not have any dents, its valves move up and down smoothly, is not noisy and all the slides move back and forth freely.
There is a systematic technique to play high notes on the trumpet. Reserves of air should be ready at a drop of a hat. The air should be pressured to release the valve, releasing the super fast air stream. A very small amount of air is required and it is not the quantity, it is the speed of the air that matters. Secondly the position of the tongue should be marked, ‘ah’ lowers the tongue and increases the volume while ‘ee’ curves the tongue and increases air speed. The speed of the air should be stressed on and not the volume. Thirdly the lip position. Lips should be pushed over the top teeth and tongue should be arched to alter the air stream. This way the lower lip curls in over the top of the bottom teeth. The top lip slightly overlaps the lower lip. The compression of the lips is caused by pulling all of the muscles in toward the center. Lastly the super fast air stream, the aim should be a key is to attain a high velocity of air and not quantity.
If you are puffing your cheeks, take your hand and literally hold your checks in, until your muscles are strong enough to do it on its own. Your goal is to obtain this super fast air stream. It is the air speed, combined with lip and tongue position that will help you in achieving a high note. When you get to the highest note that you can play, just play it over and over again. This is very tedious work, but the payoff is excellent, you will build the muscles needed to play that note every time you play it, so, make a little rhythm, whatever you need to make it, just a little interesting.
Persistence is crucial while expanding your range. When playing the trumpet, always breathe through your mouth. It may seem easier to breathe in through your nose, but to get more air fast, you must breathe in with your mouth. A lot of practice and patience is required while playing the trumpet. Breathe from your stomach and rest as often as you can after playing. The mouthpiece should not be pressed too hard while playing and lastly try not to get frustrated, if you do stop and take a few deep breaths and practice a lot.
